Yenepoya Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences and Hospital Hosts National Workshop on Diabetes Management: Madhumeha Upacharah - An Integrative Approach

Mangaluru, 31st December 2024: Yenepoya Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences and Hospital, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), successfully hosted a National Level Workshop titled "Madhumeha Upacharah - An Integrative Approach to Diabetes Management" on the 27th and 28th of December 2024. The event gathered renowned experts from the fields of naturopathy, yoga, and conventional medicine to explore innovative and holistic methods of managing Diabetes Mellitus through an integrative approach.

The two-day workshop aimed to provide healthcare professionals with valuable insights into the diagnosis, treatment, and management of diabetes, focusing on both conventional and alternative therapies such as naturopathy, yoga, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and lifestyle interventions.

The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Ravi Narain Vaswani, Professor at Yenepoya Medical College, who highlighted the growing importance of integrative healthcare in addressing chronic health conditions like diabetes. He emphasized that diabetes management requires a combination of scientific, medical, and holistic approaches to achieve better outcomes for patients. The inaugural session was presided over by Dr. B.H. Sripathi Rao, Pro Vice Chancellor of Yenepoya (Deemed to be University). In his address, Dr. Sripathi Rao lauded the workshop's objective of promoting collaboration between conventional and alternative therapies in managing diabetes. Dr Puneeth Raghavendra, Associate Professor at Yenepoya Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences College, welcomed the delegates, setting the stage for an enriching exchange of knowledge and ideas. Dr. Padmashree delivered the Vote of Thanks, expressing gratitude to all the dignitaries, speakers, and participants for their support in making the event a success.

The first day of the workshop featured a series of thought-provoking sessions on the clinical and scientific aspects of diabetes management: Session 1: Diagnostic Evaluation of Diabetes Mellites. Dr Shaheena Yassir, Associate Professor at Yenepoya Medical College, provided an in-depth look into the diagnostic tools and techniques for evaluating Diabetes Mellitus. Her session covered the importance of early diagnosis and the role of various biomarkers in assessing the progression of the disease. Session 2: Management of Diabetes Mellitus in Conventional Medicine. In this session, Dr. Balachandra S. Bhat, Associate Professor at Yenepoya Medical College, discussed the various medical treatments available for managing diabetes, focusing on pharmacological options, insulin therapy, and the use of glucose-lowering drugs. Session 3: Workplace Practices for Prevention and Management of Diabetes Dr. Puneeth Raghavendra, Associate Professor at Yenepoya Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences College, spoke on the importance of promoting healthy lifestyles in the workplace. He shared valuable insights into preventive practices, wellness programs, and lifestyle modifications that can reduce the incidence of diabetes among employees. Session 4: Dietary Interventions in Diabetes Mellitus Dr. Sowmya, Assistant Professor at the Government Nature Cure and Yoga College and Hospital, delivered a session on the role of dietary interventions in managing diabetes. She discussed how specific diets, including modern and naturopathic approaches, can help regulate blood sugar levels and prevent complications.

The second day of the workshop highlighted alternative therapies, focusing on how they can complement conventional treatments for diabetes management :Session 1: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in Diagnosis and Management of Diabetes Mellitus Dr. S. Karthick, Associate Professor at Sivaraj Naturopathy and Yoga Medical College, Salem, presented the role of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the diagnosis and management of diabetes. His session explored the use of acupuncture, herbal remedies, and energy-based therapies as part of an integrative approach. Session 2: Role of Massage Therapy in Diabetes Mellites. Dr Rithesh C, Assistant Professor at The School of Yoga and Naturopathic Medicine, Bengaluru, discussed the therapeutic role of massage therapy in managing diabetes.His session focused on how massage can improve circulation, reduce stress, and support glucose regulation in diabetic patients. Session 3: Applications of Hydrotherapy on Plasma Glucose Levels. Dr Parameshwara, Associate Professor at Tapovana Naturopathy and Yoga Medical College and Hospital, explored the use of hydrotherapy as a complementary therapy in diabetes management. His session demonstrated how water-based treatments like hydro-massage can help regulate plasma glucose levels and enhance overall wellbeing. Session 4: Reversal and Remission of Diabetes: A Naturopathy and Yoga Perspective. Dr Venugopal Vijayakumar, Assistant Medical Officer and Lecturer at Government Yoga & Naturopathy Medical College, Chennai, concluded the workshop with a compelling session on the potential for reversing and remitting diabetes through naturopathy and yoga practices. He shared evidence-based approaches on how yoga asanas, pranayama (breathing exercises), and detoxification can aid in managing and potentially reversing diabetes.

The workshop concluded with a Valedictory Program where Dr. Shivaprasad, Dean of Yenepoya Homeopathy Medical College, served as the Chief Guest. Dr. Shivaprasad emphasized the importance of ongoing research and collaboration across various disciplines to develop comprehensive, patient-centred approaches to managing chronic conditions like diabetes.The session was presided over by Dr. Puneeth Raghavendra, Associate Professor at Yenepoya Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences College, who expressed his gratitude to the speakers and delegates for their contributions to the success of the workshop. Ajith K, Assistant Professor, delivered the Vote of Thanks, recognizing the efforts of all those involved in organizing and participating in the event.

The program was expertly hosted by Farana Abida, Farahana, Swetha, and Pratheeka, students of BNYS, who ensured smooth proceedings throughout the workshop.

With over 100 delegates in attendance from various colleges and healthcare institutions, the workshop proved to be a highly successful event, offering participants valuable insights into the holistic and integrative management of diabetes. Delegates left with a deeper understanding of how combining conventional treatments with alternative therapies can provide better outcomes for diabetes patients.

The event was a significant step forward in promoting integrative health practices and fostering collaboration between different fields of medicine, naturopathy, and yoga.
